sleeper to the knee, fun times

me and my father were, as we do, hauling shit about the place. in this case, those dirty, big length's of wood, affectionately known as sleepers.

well, at one point my dad is lifting an end by himself, on reflection i am unsure why, but he then drops it...partially into a ditch.

the heading gives away this part of the story. it shoots up into my knee. it hurt to the point where it put me on my knees. my vision blurred slightly and my hearing dampened. i cant explain it, but why the hell would i lie in a story i never had to tell anyone?

i'll post of photo of the huge bruise i got going..later.

well, i think its high time i took this getting-a-jobthing seriously. so, to that end, i downloaded the application form for working at HMV. thats it for now, but my god, do i need to work, that way i can feel like im doing something besides leeching from my family (who, by the way, always told me NOT to get a job, what the hell?). oh well, if i get it, i'll actually feel like a real boy.

Music Videos

A Friend of mine, who remain nameless, should i cop any shit for this post, i dont want him in shit too, recently asked me where he could download music videos for free. Now, i assumed hes not the only one after them, and sadly, its one of those areas where googling it will lead to a whole lot of seedy results.

So, here now are some of the ways you can download music videos from the 'net.

1. Torrents
First you need to download a BitTorrent Client. my personal favourite is Azureus, it has a simple, and easy to use functionality. Next, you need to use a torrent search engine, like href="http://www.isohunt.com/" (There are many more) to find torrent files, you download these torrent files, load them into azureus, and then the client will download the file. oh so simple, but sadly, few people share files, once they have what they want, they shut off there client. Still, it works.

2. Stream Recorder
There are programs out there that allow you to "record" media streamed from websites. once you have your stream recorder, just load up one of those sites that stream music videos (like yahoo! launch, or whatever it is), and record away.

3. File Sharing
all those file sharing programs (LimeWire, eMule, Morpheus, etc, etc, etc...) will have music videos on them. go nuts.

4. IRC + File Sharing Script
There are many internet relay chat servers out there that include music videos on their channels. i dont remember any off hand. google something like "music video, irc channel" or something to that effect. you will need an IRC client, like mIRC to get into these chat channels. also, i personally install .Get as well. .GET is a file sharing script for mIRC, it just makes file sharing so much easier.

Well, that should do it, i hope you find a way that works for you, and i hope i didnt bore you all with crap you already knew, which i probably did.

Whilst the URL www.google.com.au is officially my default homepage, the Firefox extension Tab Mix Plus ensures that my browser loads with the tabs it was closed with. Needless to say, Digg.com is always loaded on the first tab. Always.

This site provides user-submitted IT news articles, which registered users can 'digg' (digg: to show appreciation). If an article receives enough diggs, it is displayed on the front page. What does this mean? It means that the users decide which articles are popular and what should be displayed on the front page. Thus, you're always going to find something interesting to read!

For all you open-source fans out there, you will already know about this one - this site is the home of open-source. Yes, the home. There's some damn wicked programs listed here, too. Some favourites are Azureus (bitTorrent client), foobar2000 (music player), and eMule (P2P client). If you find that the program doesn't have the feature you want, go to the programs listing and submit a suggestion, then keep an eye on future releases - who knows, your suggestion just might have been implemented.

The best radio station in the world has a kick ass website with music news, gig guide, program guide, podcasts, downloads, interviews, reviews, etc. If you're overseas you can stream triple j. If you've got a good connection you should take note that triple j provides a 128kbps mp3 stream (oh yeah!!).

What should I buy in Japan?

It's less than two weeks now till I go to Japan. I think I want to buy an iPod Nano (4Gb model). I toyed with the idea of buying a Video iPod, but I really don't think I'd use the video except of course, to show it off to my friends - but what is the point of that? I also want to scope out some graphics cards so when I play Quake 4 I get more than 1 frame a second in the big rooms. I would also like to get some decent headphones. Maybe even two pairs - one pair for listening to CDs at work, and top quality pair for home recording and such. Yeah, that would be awesome. I think I will spend an entire day in Akihabara (more affectionately known as the 'Electronics District').

So tell me - what else should I keep my eyes open for? Please post some comments and tell me what you think I should look for in Japan. Oh, and that's not limited to electronics. I'm gonna bring home some Japanese beer. That will of course include my favourite Japanese beer - Suntory Malts. Mmmmm, I can taste it now!

Top 10 things to do for Mum's PC on Mothers Day

After reading the digg story "Top 10 things to do for mom's PC over Thanksgiving" I decided to make my own top 10 (starting with changing the title of the article to something more relevant for us Aussies).

1 - Backup (backup Mums files to DVD(s)/CD(s). Put a copy in the drawer, and take another copy home with you. Should she ever lose her files and your backup can restore them, then you're eating roast tonight.)
2 - Clean (delete temp files, remove unused programs & files, clean Desktop & Start Menu, run antivirus checks, defrag, etc)
3 - Hardware Upgrade (If shes still got a ball mouse, get her an optical. If there is no room on her desk, get her an LCD screen)
4 - Update (check for latest updates of all programs)
5 - Optimise (check firewall settings, check Windows settings, basically make sure everything is running smoothly)
6 - Windows Search (teach Mum how to use the Windows search...she probably doesn't even know it exists! Lets face it, Mums lose their files regularly - make sure she knows how to find it when she does)
7 - Broadband (If broadband is available in your area, find a low-user plan and setup a broadband connection. Most broadband prices these days are just as good as dial-up, so even if Mum doesn't use the internet too frequently there's no excuse to upgrade. Mum will love how quick her emails arrive!)
8 - Skype (Mum WILL love Skype when she knows what to do with it - teach her. Better yet, teach Dad and tell him to teach her)
9 - Picaso (Mums love photos - this program is extremely easy to use so she should pick it up. So teach Dad, and tell him to teach Mum)
10 - VNC (Install VNC. If worst comes to worst, you can fix the problem yourself)

Welcome to my blog! (Well, that wasn't so hard now, was it!)

First and foremost. SUBSCRIBE TO THE PODCAST!! Theres a link to the right of the screen where you can get it. Myself and Richie (aka Ringo) discuss music news, and offer our own opinions. We're going to see how far we can take it. Who knows, there might be another Faster Louder in the making (except better!!). I guess I'm hoping my optomism isn't too unrealistic, but I want to create a music news site, which would of course feature the podcasts. There'd be a few other (VERY exciting) things that would set this website apart from all the other music news website, but we don't want to give anything away too early, do we?

But regardless, the advice I would offer is STAY TUNED! Everything will be coming together in due time. I'm planning on setting up a mailing list, too, so that way I can email everyone the updates. Regardless, me and Rich will be talking about the progress on the podcast anyway, so if you've subscribed to that then you're already in the loop!

In the meantime, hold on to your hats kiddies!

And one more thing, this blog may very well be called the somethingFM blog, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it is exclusively for somethingFM blogs. I'm pretty much just gonna whack anything I find interesting on here - in the true spirit of blogging!
